future. It is a program of the Collins Center for Public
Policy. It is an independent, non-partisan, non-profit
that finds smart solutions to challenges facing Florida. Since
initiating the Best Practice Awards program in 1998,
Sustainable Florida has recognized and honored more than 200
businesses, non-profit organizations, governmental groups and
individuals whose work is committed to the future success of
Florida.
"Our quality of life
is in jeopardy with reports of global warming, water
rationing, loss of natural habitat, continued population
growth exceeding 1,100 new residents a day, an increasing
economic divide, a lack of affordable workforce housing,
continued vulnerability to natural disasters, overcrowded
roads and highways, increasing energy costs and concerns about
affordable healthcare."
- Tim Center, Director
of Sustainable Florida
From
www.sustainableflorida.org - The Sustainable
Florida vision is that
every individual, organization, government and corporation
adopt and implement operational values and practices that
protect and improve Florida’s natural resources and provide
economic opportunities for all. We want to ensure that future
generations of Floridians inherit a beautiful state with rich
natural resources, healthy ecosystems, vibrant communities, a
lifestyle full of opportunities for personal growth and public
involvement, and a diverse, productive, and growing economy.

The Sustainable Florida mission is to advance the vision of
sustainability by identifying, supporting and communicating
best management practices — those which protect and preserve
Florida's environment while building markets for Florida's
businesses by enhancing their competitive advantages today.
Sustainable Florida
promotes sustainable best management practices through
collaborative educational efforts throughout Florida. These
efforts include convening and working with regional grassroots
sustainability organizations and Florida’s colleges and
universities.
Sustainable Florida's
signature initiative is its annual Best Practice Awards. Now
in its 10th year, the organization solicits nominations,
recognizes and honors businesses, organizations and
individuals whose work demonstrates that a healthy environment
and a healthy economy are mutually supportive. Awards
categories include Small and Large Business, Leadership,
Non-Profit, Government, Business Partnership, and the Green
Building Award.

The future success of Florida
depends upon individuals, organizations, corporations and
government working together and responsibly to preserve and
conserve our natural resources, maintain continued economic
success and ensure that all in our state have the opportunity
for a safe, healthy and vibrant quality of life.
Sustainable Florida identifies exemplary, sustainable
practices of business, government and citizen groups. These practices
are disseminated statewide through strategic communications,
publications and conferences. Sustainable Florida actively encourage others to adopt and build upon these
best practices to sustain Florida’s resources; and serve as a catalyst in higher education and supporting
an agenda that makes sustainability a cornerstone of
academic practice.
